Headaches

My doctor wants me to go to physical therapy for my headaches. Why?

I cannot speak specifically for your physicians’ decision, but I can assure you that most orthopedic physical therapists treat people with headaches as long as they originate from the upper neck. Cervicogenic headaches, which simply means headaches that originate from the neck, have become a much more common diagnoses over the past couple years. Due to the variety of structures inside one’s head that can cause headaches, it usually takes a good neurologists several months, if not years, to rule out all these very volatile possibilities. Once your doctor checks out and verifies that all the parts inside your head are intact, then they can look other places. That’s when they find your neck. The upper portion of the cervical spine contains both nerves and muscles that can affect the head. If you pinch a nerve in the upper neck, it can cause pain to radiate from the base of your skull to behind your eyes; just like a pinched nerve in your low back will create leg pain. Another common occurance is when the muscle that is attached to the base of your head become scarred down or inflamed. This usually causes a non-specific pain in the back of your head. It does not matter which of these cervical structures is causing your headaches. A good orthopedic physical therapist should be able to fix it.
